Abstract:

Facilitators from the Sutter Medical Center Sacramento and CPMC Cathedral Hill projects will be working with you in small groups on a typical design/construction problem, and in so doing pass on to you what they have learned about how to get a multi-discipline team to successfully plan their decisions and their work together.  (See below for more detailed information)

Details:

One of the big lessons learned on this project has been that though we all know what work we do to get a project done, what we don’t know all the time is why we do it.  We also know very little about what our project partners do, let alone why they do it.  Because of this it is extremely difficult to plan work reliably.  In this session we will set up some classic problems in design and construction and ask you to create the plan of work that will achieve the required conclusion.  It will show that process mapping with post-its and marker pens is really just a way of creating a visual record of a focused multi-party conversation about a particular issue. It will show that the reason it’s a successful tool to bring to a project is because of the way it gets the team to communicate with each other.

Value-Added Proposition (i.e., how it benefits attendees)

Learn that one of the keys to project success is a well facilitated conversation about what we are going to do and why. And in actually experiencing such a conversation, realize it’s a far from trivial endeavor to move from realizing it’s a good idea, to actually completing such a conversation.  Be exposed to some of the skills to facilitate such a conversation.

LCI Nor Cal Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Northern California Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI  provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Northern California. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
